By Melissa Favara OCT 12, 2006
C.C. Cowan, an author, playwright and Canarsie native, is finally bringing his work to the stage. His play "Gals: Too Big for Broadway" will be performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York City for several performances, October 19-21, 2006. Cowan, who published, "Life Through My Eyes," a 2001 collection of short stories and poetry, has his first full-length novel "Too Big for Broadway!" based on the stage production scheduled for release in September 2007, as well as "SKIN," scheduled for release this December 2007. The double sophomore release is guaranteed to
garner a ton of success for the Brooklyn author. Although he had mostly written fiction, Cowan wanted to explore all facets of his talent. "As a writer, I strive towards all genres," says Cowan.
One day, a friend told him he should enter a contest for one-act plays. So, Cowan sat down and wrote "Gals." Not only did the play win the contest, but it opened many doors for the play's future.
Along with the upcoming run in New York City, Cowan is in the process of filming the t.v version for the STARZ Network.
"Gals" is a dramatic comedy musical with a great cast and confident plotline. The lead character is a plus-sized en-tertainer who gets kicked out of a play she's in which she's performing because she's told she's too old (over 35) and overweight. She calls on two of her diva friends to help her set the record straight and let the world know that "Thin may be in, but big things come in even bigger packages!" Cowan is said to have been in talks with many noted actors when searching for the right cast for "Gals," such as Loretta Devine, Jennifer Lewis, Robin Givens Phyllis Yvonne Stickney and others.
The cast for the stage production is schedule to include Martha Wash, Sarah Dash and Judy Peterson. Martha Wash is best known as the powerhouse vocalist behind the mega dance hits of C&C Music Factory and The Weather Girls, famous for the disco hit, "It's Raining Men, Sweat and Strike it Up." Dash was one of the Blue Bells who sang with Patti Labelle, while Peterson is known for her work in Tyler Perry's movies and stage productions. These musical icons make the play a sure hit. This won't be the last you hear of Cowan. Along with his double novel release this year, he has another future project for which he is very proud of.
Cowan his recently written his very first children's book entitled: The Case of The Missing Pooch. The title is the 1st of 6 in his debute series entitled: AMANDA'S AMAZING ADVENTURES. Each story will explore the adventures of a 6 year old super slewth named Amanda Hill, she has lots of cool friends, quirky neighbors, and a knack for solving mysteries. Cowan is currently courting several film houses in hopes of bringing the story to the big screen. Cowan was born and raised in Brooklyn and grew up in the East New York/Brownsville areas. He still has a home in the area that he likes to come back to. He wants the world to know that "through God all things are possible."
